Week 16 Final Blog
Earthquakes are one of Morocco's biggest naturals hazards as the movement of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates near their border in northern Morocco is the main source of the country's seismic activity. Morocco's northern region, close to the plate boundary, has the highest seismic risk. In Algeria, the Rif Mountains and the Tell Atlas mountain range are commonly linked to earthquakes.
Floods are another big natural hazard in Morocco because Morocco's diverse climate, rough terrain, and fast urbanization can overflow drainage systems, making floods a serious natural hazard. Flash floods are mostly caused by heavy rainfall, inefficient land management, and the seasonal nature of rivers. Floods are a big issue because they damage living conditions, destroy infrastructure, and take lives, especially in areas that are already at risk.
In order to lessen the effects of earthquakes, I would have developed response plans, building codes, building reinforcements, and disaster risk reduction strategies. I would also have the nation fund frequent earthquake drills and public awareness initiatives to make sure that communities are ready and aware of what to do in the case of a seismic catastrophe. Additionally, I would collaborate with international organizations and experts to enhance its seismic monitoring systems and improve early warning mechanisms for better preparedness and response.
Morocco's northern region is close to the plate boundary, it has the highest seismic risk so I would focus on targeting help to that area first. Additionally, this area is heavily populated, which raises the possibility of significant human effect during earthquakes. Quick action and strong infrastructure assistance could reduce the dangers and improve the effectiveness of recovery operations.
I would build my house in the coastal region as it is away from major tectonic fault lines, while the mountainous regions like the High Atlas are more prone to earthquakes and related natural disasters. The coastal region offers a relatively stable terrain and the advantage of being close to essential resources and economic activities like fishing and tourism.
